LS1 Ignition Coil Issue

Recommended Posts

I’m out in glamis. Buggy starts running bogging a bit under heavy load (like going up hill or lugging the next higher gear).  We get to olds and I try to make a run up the easy side and motor stalls while jamming up the hill. I crank it over and have a couple pretty spectacular fireballs come out of the exhaust but the engine isn’t firing. I wait as the unburned fuel in the headers gives the crowd a magic dragon type show then hit the starter again after a minute. Engine stumbles to life and I get back down hill. I take the road back and have no issues. Throttle response is not crisp but as long as I stay in first gear the power feels like it is there.

I pulled the engine shroud and look at the coil packs for the first time and see they are not all matching and several of them are translucent plastic and cracked.  Are these coils bad?

The plugs don’t look horrific but I’ll be replacing these anyway.

They were all tight (tighter than I would have installed them).

one of those plugs looks odd to me.  I'm no expert, but what is up with plug #3 from the left?

Get yourself a heat gun, point a each header one at a time and see if one is cooler that the rest.

I’m thinking that they are all firing most of the time and when under extra load they fail. I have an infrared thermometer...at home.

Third from the left looks the best to me. But assuming they are all the same age, it would appear that it’s doing less work than the others.

also sounds like a cam sensor issue

This is good info, especially coming from you. Thanks. Any other ideas?

Heat guns give odd readings they will make you chase your tail

water bottle and drizzle a little water on each pipe. Near the head

of the water rolls off then it is a issue. If it sizzles like water in a hot pan then it is working.

A great cheap tool is a spark tester it goes inline with wire and has a little light when firing

Also all could have a ground and a positive make sure the power and grounds are clean

What do you mean by "odd" readings? If you have a dead cylinder, a decent gun immediately shows a massive temp difference when aimed at the base of the header.

Thanks @J Alper ! Found the cam position sensor and noticed the wires broken at the weather pack connector. Soldered then back together and symptoms are gone.
