School me on motorhomes

Recommended Posts

Thinking of selling my fifth wheel and going motorhome.   Want a diesel pusher but seeing a lot more gas powered motorhomes.   Trying to upgrade to maybe a 20-24 foot double stacker possibly.  Would anyone do a gas versus diesel?

If you are planning on towing a stacker or anything bigger than a 24' box honestly then only go diesel pusher. You will be maxing out a gasser and it won't be a fun tow. And if you go the stacker route try to find something with at least 400hp. A 330 will do it but a 400hp is much better on the hills. Not sure what your budget is but if you  can swing it definitely get a tag axel. They tow much better than than a single axel

The way things have been going as far as prices before covid we were hoping for about 50ish...  I dont know if we are that far off

If you are planning on a stacker you will need a pusher.   In the $50K range it will be tough to find one with the current Covid used and new prices.  You may want to bump up the budget to $100K to give you a shot of finding something decent.

You will be too limited on gas for towing much of anything especially a stacker. Like mentioned above 400hp is nice, a 330+ will work. Series 2500 transmission with a goal of a 3000 for what you need. Most 400hp will come with the 3000. Also when you have the larger diesel you will have the brakes you need to stop the trailer. Covid pricing is still high but slowly coming down. Don't be afraid of higher mileage coaches that have been used and maintained.

Did find a Vectra we liked  for about 60.  400hp.

Pricing is nutty right now.  It might calm down some toward the end of summer when families are done traveling around.

A wise man once told me to buy my second motorhome first, so basically double your budget. don't shop for anything with Grant George ..haha

We have a 24’ stacker with 450hp and a tag And it’s slow over the mountain passes.  There is not a chance in hell you will pull a loaded stacker over any pass with with a gasser.  Maybe one or two times but that would be it.

A stacker is a completely different tow then a regular box trailer or even a 5th.  I have pulled a 45’ 5th all over the country and have done thousands of miles with a 32 enclosed and never felt uncomfortable. I have about 4000 miles pulling a stacker with my 350 and i dread it every time it comes up.  It’s plain awful.

Know what you want and what you won't settle for. Have cash on hand and be ready to pull the trigger for the right deal. There are deals out there, just gotta check the forums and websites everyday. Don't be afraid to offer $20k below asking price if you have the cash in hand but to do that show up in person to make the offer. Low balling via email or PM won't get you a deal. I have always dropped my price for someone willing to stand in front of me rather than someone making me an offer from a keyboard. Even if the ad says "Firm" don't let that scare you off. It's for sale because they don't need it or they need to get rid of it. I'd much rather sell to someone who will enjoy whatever I'm selling rather than someone I know is gonna slap some polish on it and bump the price to make a quick profit. Not a fan of flippers, be it sandrails or RVs.

My only comment, if you camp in the washes, I would would stay away from a tag axle.  They get stuck much easier than a single rear axle.

I have a 40’ 2001 Holiday Rambler 40PBD that I’d sell for $36k. It’s got a 330hp Cummins with 115k and the Allison 3000 transmission. I’ve heard that it can easily be tuned to 400hp but the way it runs it may have been done already. I just bought it in Lubbock in February just before Pres Day. Pulled my 24’ enclosed packed to the ceiling to Glamis from NM and back flawlessly. I’ve had 1 other DP and a few gassers and it really impressed me. PM me if you want more details.
