AAA RV, Good Sam or a buddy with a tow rope? What do you use? Keep your chit tight and pay the bill if you absolutely need it?

Its time to renew my AAA RV that i have never used (knock on wood).

I have had AAA and used it a couple times. It has probably paid for itself already.

I have AAA and its good for registrations, insurance etc. Havent had to use it to tow any of my daily drivers. I have used it 2 times to tow my Motorhome and at the end of the day my rig was towed and I was reimburresed however the call center people dont understand large diesel motorhomes when you make the call to be towed.

I have yet to change my policy but I have read their are better options for towing big stuff.

AAA is great for cars, not so great for motorhomes.
Good Sam is great for motorhomes, not so great for cars (actually they suck).

AAA has been good for me, but haven't used it for my RV is a few years. I have the highest level they offer due to having kids on it as well. When I had my truck/5th wheel, they towed me home 3 different times and it was awesome, but this was 10-12 years ago.

I've always paid for AAA tow for RV/Trailer and when I called to use it for the first time about 6 months ago they wouldn't do it. Had a bad axle on a boat trailer that was 30' long. Asked them to tow it to my house and they said the only thing they would do is put it on a flat bed, but they didn't have any flatbeds in the area that were long enough so it would take them 24 hours to get a dispatch out. I said screw it, strapped the axle up and towed it home on one axle on side streets. Luckily I had that option. I'd be pissed if I had to wait 24 hours for them in a different situation. That being said, I still pay for it...

I now also pay for Boat US road tow for my boats as well.

It's always good to have options for the cost. We have AAA Plus due to our Travels across the Western US, haven't needed it but it's nice to have as where we go... any friend is over 500 miles away. When I start towing again, I'll pick up the Good Sam coverage.

I've also always had AAA for RV & Trailer. When I've tried to use it had same issue - they didn't have anyone local that could handle it. Eventually sent a flatbed after 5 hours that was way too small. Called a friend that had parts and we fixed it. The flat bed driver did go make a run to get an extra part I needed - so he was super helpful! I paid him out of pocket.

Ok, so now im hearing RV towing a trailer is not that easy and tow company's are not equipped.

Maybe just eff it and call a homie is the way to go. Worst case would be find a hotshot towing company to pull trailer if im having truck problems. Trailer problems, break out the welding machine or chain up an axle and run it!

I don't know if they cover 5th Wheel's or not but might try CoachNet. I don't have them (or any coverage) but many on the Renegade RV forum claim that CaochNet is one of the best and that AAA sucks for RV's.

Watch out... some of those guys charge up to $300/hour.

I paid someone to move my Weekend Warrior HKD4005 about 10' back and 3' over to get away from a leach field the day after I bought it (the guy I bought it from couldn't drive/backup for shit and gave up) and it was $250 for 10 minutes of work.

Rumor only, AAA has been screwing with the tow companies, so the contracts are not as lucrative as they used to be.........just rumor

bump, its time to update my towing insurance. Seems like AAA is the way to go for 5th wheel.

Insurance?

State Farm covers all of my chit. Boat, trailer, house, cars, Harley, you name it.

Emergency Road Side?

Yeah, State Farm offers it, but I declined, and use AAA instead. Just being able to go there, and Not the DMV when I have an issue, is worth the price of admission alone.
