I decided to pull my early mendeola s4 out of the car I bought last year and have it gone through. I was going back and forth on having the gen 3 shift mechanism installed. I ended up giving the shop the go ahead, but i am looking for feed back from those with early s4 or s5's that had the upgrade done. Was it worth it? I did not have any issue with the way the transmission shifted last season but for peace of mind figured it was better to do it now than later.

I went from an early s4 to a new complete gen 3 S4.
Didn't notice any difference.

Sean says the new shift mechanism is a good upgrade.
I have a Gen 2 and a good shifter and mine just clicks in.
The shifter also plays a part in how well it shifts.
So does adjustment.

It was the BEST THING I EVER DID, it has always shifted bad, ever update they had i did, the last version is night and day, it shift better than a Albins now,
Same as above no more stuck in gear, no more ghost shift, just super smooth,

I believe it has a lot to do with it working fine or not. Many gen 2 units with no problems and the rebuilders will say if it ain't broke don't fix it. I was one of those with my S4 subi package. I left the gen 2 shifter as is.

That’s what McMullen says.

Watch my Instagram video for a detailed explanation and showing the differences between Gen 1, 2, and 3.

Bottom line is the Gen 3 shifts faster, whether you notice it or not. It really helps save wear and tear on the shift dogs, saving you money when it comes time for service.
