The problem is almost like being color blind but for sand.. I can’t seem to see where the drop offs or hell even the step ups are unless it’s crazy obvious.

I’ve been asking around and apparently this isn’t that uncommon. My buddy has planes, boats, Offroad etc.. doesn’t drink 20:20 vision the whole 9. I was talking to him about it and he said ā€œDave I just don’t do it.. I can’t see it, I’m not good at it. When I go I ride with one of the experts that is good at it, and I find I’m good for two or three years.ā€ lol.

Just around camp there was more than a few guys that said basically the same thing and responded with ā€œthat’s why I never lead.ā€

Morning and afternoon help a ton with this with shadows. Winter is nice as well as the sun is to the south.

Noon early/late in the season is super treacherous since it's just a big tan mirror. Yellow lenses help with this, but it's always a problem.

I think it’s probably best if I just follow someone or ride with someone..

What are you running for eye wear? I run either my old sun clouds or Vaurnet skiing glasses.. MAKE A Ton of difference with a clear lens. At night I take them off, no lens switching. I lost a pair of 80s sunclouds....broke my heart....the rose tint is the best for the sand.

Kinda depends on the situation. Usually knuckles goggles with interchangeable lenses.

Sometimes just regular sunglasses

I was amazed at how much difference good glasses make. We run pumpers so that's our option. Haven't found a goggle worth a shit when it comes to seeing in the dirt, dust, sand. Oakleys were good, but the lenses got stupid expensive. Try GOOD polarized sunglasses and see if that helps.

I never lead. EFF that.

Even though one day @ChEFF sat me down and explained it to me, And had me lead the group through a few dunes! 😱

Him and Sampler can read the dunes like no others. He was explaining to me how looking at the ripples in the sand in the morning, tell you where the drop offs will and won't be. Fuck. That's WAY too much thinking for me!!! It has to be 2nd nature to keep the safety of your group, your first priority.

I wanna just haul azz and not worry about shit!

I Always let Jeff or Rob lead. šŸ‘šŸ¼šŸ‘šŸ¼

And now that chEFF has a SxS, even though it won't be near as much fun as a quad, you'll be loving life following him.

Nobody does it better with noobs than chEFF.

Following Rob is a fucking E ticket.

Choose wisely. šŸ˜Ž

P.S. No one can read the dunes if it's not morning or late afternoon. It ain't just you.

There is Way more to the sand than you realize at this point, but you'll get there. šŸ‘šŸ¼

I usually run my polarized sunglasses during the day and clear goggles at night

If there are no tracks it is really hard to see. Especially between 12-2p. Last year during the day I switched to a Amber colored shield for my helmet and that helped a lot. Up until last season I had no issues seeing with just a tinted shield.

I lead 90% of the time. The fun rides are late afternoon into the sun.

Having some tracks helps out a lot.

Sketchy is going out when there are no tracks and the wind is blowing the sand at the tops of the dunes.

When you lead, it's wise to know who is behind you.
Also, if the vultures are circling above that next hill, slow down a bit.
The guy behind you may be me.
100% this.

I started leading my old group because the other guys would just go to the destination and never look back. Both in nice long travelV8 cars. Most everyone else (including me) on quads. The REAL stupid part was that both of them had young daughters on quads following. I would typically bring up the rear as I knew the dunes the best. I got tired of picking up the pieces of crying teenage girls after they got stuck, crashed, etc., only to finally get to where we were headed with a "where'd you guys go?".

So, one trip I loudly made it known those moofers were going to be in the back from now on.

This drives me nuts. I look back constantly and circle back often - out front is tough unless you DGAF like the dudes you described...

I'm happy to be the last guy, chillin and helping is way less stressful.

I LOVE leading folks through the dunes.

My old group is still trying to figure out good lines. Yup... I said it.

"I've NEVER used the Dunes THAT MUCH! I'll follow you ANYTIME!"

-Leaddog, after a run through the Big Dunes on a Memorial Day trip in 2008.

This is me leading Greengo, my Buddy Alex who passed away, Scotty (his video) and a Marine from here that said he could keep up and ended up puking multiple times (Raptorrush?)...
