St Anthony / Cody Wyoming summer trip

Back to Idaho Dunes RV. We looked at Sand Hills but that place looks run down now.
Just curious, what did you see that turned you away? I stayed there in 2012 with Bababouy and it was minimal but nice. Back then IDRV didn't have any trees so it was to better choice for kids and hanging out. That seems to have changed.

I'm planning another trip for next year and was going to head to Sand Hills again... but welcome feedback for all Campgrounds.

I have stayed at Sand Hills two years in a row. The water to the entire campground was shut off several times without warning, even though management knew they would be shutting the water off hours in advance. One year there was a grand total or three of us in the campground. Not hard to let us know they would be shutting the water off before getting the shower. Second year I called to make my reservation. The lady who answered the phone reserved the wrong days. When I called back to ask her to correct her mistake she charged me a rebooking fee to correct her mistake. There was garbage around the campground including a shat pair of undershort. Every morning a campground employee who turned the sprinklers on walked past the garbage on his morning walk. The bathrooms and showers were never cleaned. When you check in you are treated like an unwanted guest.
It looks like the campground was owned by a very good guy for years, which resulted in people coming back for decades. Then he sold and the individual spaces are now privately owned, but managed by the Lady Tremaine of the year.
IDRV runs a better campground and treats you like a guest.

What's the deal with this open camp area? I hate the idea of being in an RV park.

Definitely nothing like I experienced. Thanks for the clarity!

First trip after I retire
I was there for the first time in June this year and honestly not too impressed. There was not a good flow for miles on end like G. The transitions are very steep and akward. Lots of rocks and bushes to navigate around. The steep dunes made seeing traffic more difficult.

It was nice to check them out but i doubt ill go back. I have a buddy who is there right now with a large group and im curious to get his opinion as its his first time there.

Kind of what I figured and for 24 hours (round trip) with the steering wheel in my hand as Cheff says. Taking a week of vacation time that cannot be used for Glamis when I usually am running out of vacation time by the end of Glamis season would mean cutting that one short by like three trips and that isn't going to happen. Getting more Vacation time isn't happening either and if I change jobs by the time I accrue what vacation time I have now I will be on the cusp of retiring.
So it will have to wait until I can take 3 months and visit St. Anthony, Yellowstone and make a nice long roundabout trip out of it.

In my opinion, if you're not going up there to see more than the Dunes, it's not worth it. If you want to see everything around the area and take your time to see the different areas... it's worth every penny spent and vacation time used. A week is not enough, considering the drive time from your area. 10 -14 days is more realistic with all there is to do outside of St. Anthony. A good window would also include July 4th for a true American Parade.

absolutely go north from St Anthony and get into the trees. Beautiful country up there.

I loved it up there ...

The dunes are far more spread out, so on my quad, I was in 5th gear flat out a LOT of the time.

In Glamis, it's rare I'll get out of 3rd.

And the big dunes are actually BIG!

Devil's bowl is massive. Even the big sand rails were wide open running around it...

When you're at the top of Choke Cherry, the people at the bottom look like ants. And it's Very steep. I can't recall seeing any sand rail guys attempt it.

It's a very different vibe. Peaceful and wide open so you can Really haul azz in top gear.

Kinna the complete opposite of Glamis. 😎

I've been there twice and thought it was awesome. There definitely aren't miles of good flow like Glamis, but from the lake west to Devil's Dune is friggin' awesome.

First time we did two weeks the end of July beginning of August 2012. Two day drive up, two day drive down.So 10 days at Sand Hills. We would dune for a couple of days, then head out somewhere to sight see. Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Bear World and Ice Caves... This broke things up nicely so the wives didn't get burned out on duning. There were definitely some hot days, but it was only bad in the middle of the day, it cooled down nicely at night.

Second trip was in 2022. We went in early June right after the kids got out of school. Same drive times, but we stayed at a buddies house for a night or two on the way up and did two nights at Lava Hot Springs on the way home. This left us with 5 days @ St. Anthony's. Given that it was early June it hadn't warmed up yet and we lost a day or two to wind. Kind of a bummer, but still a good trip.

I didn't really notice the decline at Sand Hills, but the park was kind of a mess with mud puddles due to some pretty big rains right before we arrived. Will probably try Idaho Dunes for the next trip. Hopefully next year.
