Well, I was irresponsible and effed up.

I rented a mini van for vacation from my local branch. I rent there about 2-3 weeks out of every month.
So we drive to Destin Florida, and before we left I grabbed a pistol off my dresser, threw it in a holster and we took off.

Go on vacation, and when we get back I go to the car wash to do a full cleaning as it was covered in bugs so I go to the car wash, get it all cleaned up, all detailed out on the inside, fill it up and drive it back and turn it in. I had the pistol in the center console which is behind the front seats within arms reach. I knew it was there, I had nothing to put it in, and was planning on getting it out when my daughter dropped by to pick me up and take me to my truck.
Well I forgot it..................... ALL DAY....................... and as I'm driving by that night about 6pm as I look over at the branch off the highway I have my OH SHIT moment.
So I panic call the branch manager on her cell, and she says, did you forget something? Yep, sure did, do you have it? NO, sorry we had to turn it over to local PD.
This is Thursday before memorial weekend.
When they were sanitizing/wiping down the inside, they found it, so they have to immediately lock down the vehicle and call police, meanwhile the poor guy trying to rent my van I turned in, had to wait until PD showed up to get it.

So I call local PD non emergency, they say property room is closed until Tuesday, and they don't really know if an officer picked it up from the rental car place.
She said just call Tuesday.
So I show up Tuesday, property clerk said I was off last week, so I have 200 property items to file, so check on Friday.
She said bring proof of ownership................Well that's an issue lol. But I do have the box with the serial number on it, and she said I'll take that.
Show up Friday, they run me for felonies, make sure I'm good and releases the pistol, mag, ammo and holster back to me.

Needless to say, that won't happen again!!!!!

Now to inventory all the pistols and serial numbers, as none of the 12 I have were bought by me originally. Most are new, just someone else bought them, and got hard up for money and sold them to me.
LUCKILY I had the case, otherwise I would have lost it I'm sure.
And the only reason I knew which one it was as I had bought some 3d printed stands and that one didn't work, so it was not on a stand, otherwise I probably wouldn't have known which one I even brought along for vacation.

KNUCKLEHEAD move.
The rental car girl was really worried I wouldn't get it back, but like I told her, not your problem, you followed policy, you did your job. Glad noone got hurt or some kid didn't find it.

Holy shit man. I left a usb charger in one once, never got it back…
i find alot of stuff, headphones, wallet, one time they called me asking about a gun, and when i looked yep it was in there. not mine lol. I just drove it back up there and gave it to them. different manager

Wow, I had fully expected that to go another direction.... but I'm in the comunist state of Kalipornia..... glad it was nothing more serious
