Get well JD

Seems like a million years ago, I found a need to travel from Los Angeles
to Denver Colorado.
I had an old 1956 Ford, way past its "Sell By Date" and discovered the highway was
under construction most of the way.
Eisenhower was POTUS, and the Communist threat was on everyone's mind.
POTUS decided to create a "Nationwide highway system" and included the
ability to land military aircraft on said highway during a commie attack.
The solution was to design a one mile "Straight and level" portion of the highway
every so often to protect the military aircraft by letting them land after the airfields
were destroyed.. As I was driving, the highway changed from one lane to
dirt ever so often.

(Side note) Nothing ever happens without a lobbyist suggesting it. (End Side Note)

I found it amusing that tremendous construction was going in on the slopes of
Western Colorado.
They were "Grooming" downhill ski slopes. Massive condo development that needed
a wide highway to support tourism. (just saying)
The good news was, the tallest mountain was being avoided by building
the world famous "Eisenhower Tunnel" through the mountain.
When I reached the tunnel, it was about 75% dirt and lots of stop or slow
signs everywhere. I did live thorough it though.
A fun memory of the corruption of the lobbyist system vs Government.
