S5 Input Shaft Seal - Do it yourself?

Found out why my clutch was slipping - now wondering if I should just change out the input shaft seal myself, or now that it's out of the car have it gone through by a pro ...looks like it's number 20 on the below file from weddle...S45-9113 | S459113 | Weddle Industries | Racing Transaxles, Gears, Gearboxes, Clutches 

I can wiggle the shaft a bit, which might be why the seal is bad, or might be normal? Number 11 on the shot below also seems to help hold the shaft centered...

Take it to McDowell Performance. He is local to San Diego. He is a straight shooter and will advise you on whether a complete tear down is necessary.

 
I would say since you are already half way there, just take it in to have it checked. Would be a bummer to do the seal and have it be something else and you have to remove it twice. 

 
a little play in the shaft is normal i would check the piolt bearing in the crank not hard to change the seal

 
I just recently replaced mine on my S4D with the trans still in the car, pretty easy like L.R.S. said. Order an extra just in case but only took a few min to get it out and slide the new one in. Might as well put in a new TO bearing while its apart too 

 
That is alot of oil.

I would pull the clutch and check the discs, PP etc.

It's easy to do.  Input shaft should have some wiggle to it up/down, but not in/out.

Head down to McDowell and buy a couple, he generally has them in stock.

 
Sorry, forgot you said this was the reason you were pulling motor to check clutch.

I bet the clutch discs are shot with impregnated oil.

 
Dropped off the trans at McDowell today - asked him to go through it (since I never have, and not sure previous owner ever did?) Also going to move to a stage 3 dual disc clutch (from a stage 2 dual disc)...ordered new pressure plate, new discs, floater plate, new pilot bearing, and all new bolts (~$800 for the parts).  My flywheel looks good -not too burnt looking an no divots that I can see or feel, plus new and only 1 season on it.

Also purchased a pilot bearing removal tool - I've never had to remove one - hoping it comes out easyish.

If anyone is interested in my stage 2 pressure plate let me know...1 season and 2 trips old. 50 bucks?

Hoping to be back in action in 2 or 3 weeks...Kartek already shipped my parts out today :).

 
no one has mentioned anything about your trans vent.  this is a must.  take off the hose and lightly blow through it. it should have zero restriction  if it has some restriction it is not a good vent.  this will cause back pressure in the tranny and force oil out of even your new seal.  i do not like looping the vent hose in a circle either.

btw if you didnt touch your TO bearing, then it looks like it was ready to twist off!

Thanks - yes, half of the throw-out bearing retainer spring is off the shaft in the pic (i messed with it before taking the picture) - and my vent tube is clear as I'm always puking a little bit of oil out of it.

You will be happy with McDowell’s product. Alumi Craft  recommended as well.

dont assume that because you are puking oil from the tube its clear--you must test it with your mouth and it must blow easy--any restriction is too much!
