What age did you take your kids for rides?

I heard a very tragic story about two kids under 1 year old loosing their life's in a sand car from breaking their necks. My son is 9 months old and will not be in my car until next year. No reason to risk it. 

Next year he will have a car seat in the car, but I will only take him out on non crowded weekends at a slow pace. 

 
It was a long time ago and had a standard travel buggy with VW.  There were no ruts or anything back then, but they started going about 3 yrs old, put a BMX full face helmet on them and sat in their car seats.  They slept during most of the rides back then.

 
Started taking my kid at 2 1/2 years old.  I strapped a car seat in and when he got bigger used a PRP kids booster seat.
