I appreciate all the feedback. I have an employee who has worked for me for over 10 years. He does quality work, but he is just slow. I gave him a promotion to a lead position last year and had to put another team member in his place, as he could not keep up with the production plan. He dilly dallies and spends time not in his work area but came to me for a request for a large raise. I have other guys ready to fill the void, if he leaves. I just feel he does less, doesn't give 100% at all times., works at his own pace and slows others down at times. My issue is I appreciate loyalty. I understand the employee level, always wants more even if they are doing the same. I have full benefits, bonus program and profit sharing so it's not like they do not earn a great living.

Very interesting to see how some on here view their professions.

It would be my experience that this guy will only get lazier if you only give him the raise without discussing the issues you mentioned . His mind set right now is " Man, I been here 10 years I deserve a big raise".

If it were me I'd respond with, "Ya know, I have been wanting to give you this raise too but you aren't giving me a performance worthy of your potential".  Get the truth on the table or it will turn into a mind game with him.  This statement also allows you to control the conversation's narrative not being he is due, but he is lacking. How he responds to this will tell you a lot about were he is at in his own head.

Sometimes it's just time for guys to go. But I hope you get it worked out. Please update us.

  3. Great stories here.

I am 56. I have been an avid 2 wheel MX guy since I was about 8years old. I fell in love with Mother G back in 2000. I have since done both 2 and 4 wheels these last 24 years. So many great memories and stories have come outta this time.

We too raised all our kids riding and camping between places like G and Ocotillo etc. We have 1 kiddo left outta 4. He is only 13 and now it's just he and I in our little 21 footer and a couple quads. If it were up to my boy he'd stare at a screen 24/7. But I insist on getting him out camping and riding.

Loading, prepping machines, driving, & paying for everything has gotten really old. I am now finding a lot of comfort in life just hanging around my house doing projects with an occasional SXS ride outta my drive way.  But I do it all for the kid, butI do still have a ton of fun too I guess.

    Here's our latest trip.

  4. Our main goal is to ride trackless dunes. It is me and my last of four kids still camping and riding.  We ride quads so the smaller to medium dunes are best for us. Because of this we ride in between off weekends. And we always camp in the washes. We go from 9-10 in slow times to about 14 on busier trips.

We used to always go to wash 22 when the road basically ended at was 13 then looked like stadium whoops all the way back to 22. We lifted out toy haulers, and our tow vehicles just to get back there. It was peaceful and dunes right up to the camper. These days it is like Las Vegas back there LoL.

  5. UPDATE 2/9/24:

I want to thank all of you for your advice. I ended up going with ADP. I have been working on getting everything transferred over from Paychex these last few weeks (Mama says Paychex is THE DEVIL).

I am so impressed at their level of customer service.  One thing in particular was I just gave my rep the Log In info for Paychex and she transferred everything over, hire dates, bank info, tax info etc. for me.

Also their site is so user friendly compared to Paychex. You have to be freaking Watson to figure our anything on the Paychex site.

Since 2017 Paychex had caused me tons of stress at least twice a year as they mismanaged everything from bank account info to actual departments.  And for some reason it was ALWAYS when I was on vacation. Many times causing my employees whom I value highly to get paid late. That's why I left.

Again thank you guys. Always good peeps here.

  6. It is one of Five things.

1). You are drifting around mountain roads. (this would wear all four)

2). Assuming your front end is tight you need an alignment (this would only wear the fronts)

3). You may have play in the tie rods, ball joints, Idler Arm and/or Pitman Arm - and also need an alignment. (this would only wear the front)

4). You drive mainly on a worn out road where the outside edges of the pavement is crowned downward to the center of the lane. (This would wear all four)

5). The worn ones are under inflated - doesn't sound like that to me though.

    Keep us posted.

Are there still tweakers running around BB?

If you are referring to a few years back where there were 500+ living up in the forests for the summer & walking down 18 to live in Lucerne for the winter then no. Of course there are tweakers everywhere nowadays, but nothing like that debacle.  My shop used to be right off a road that lead to the tweaker camps up in the hills behind me, they'd stumble down, walk into my shop and babble, scare customers, use our bathroom to shower in LoL. Glad that's over.

Develop a personal relationship with them... Some people like to be told they did a good job every day (even for the small things), some people want to be left alone entirely, some people want you to be their best friend and talk to them about what's on their mind...But what I've learned is that all people are different in what makes them happy in a business setting.

If you develop a personal relationship and find out what makes them happy (even if it disgusts you in example to tell someone who sucks they did a great job that day) - do it.  When they call out sick, tell them - I hope you feel better soon, we will miss you at the shop (when in reality you're thinking to yourself, f'ng douche :) ).  Don't give them a guilt trip, tell them to take care of themselves and that you look forward to seeing them back at work.  If people feel like the people who manage them genuinely care about them, they will be more likely to show up for work and work hard for you.

Love all the comments thanks guys, Also LoL, This sounds like exactly what I do. Great advice always.

FYI we offer all our guys a competitive wage with the opportunity to earn bonuses and advancement at a fast pace if they have 3 things, good attitude, attendance and performance.  Paid holidays, no weekends, closed from Wed thru Sun for T-Day paid, Closed Christmas Eve until the 2nd also paid. Clean organized mellow environment. Myself and my manager never talk down to or show negativity to any employee. We let them make that bed. I have learned that bad employees will expose themselves to be so in time.

I am just surprised at how flakey our society is becoming.

  9. I have been managing people since I was 16 back in the 80's. I started at the old Shell Station off Crown Valley and Niguel road. It is now the Chevron there. Fast forward, through 40 years restaurants, landscaping companies, sales companies, and my current business of Auto mechanics and Tire sales here in Big Bear since 1999.

But these last few years I am seeing a huge increase in "I am sick", I need to take my grandma to the hospital", "CPS is at my house", " I though I was off yesterday",  or just no call no show then a plethora of reasons. Etc. etc. etc.  Some of you are rolling your eyes right now as I am sure this isn't just me.

When I was young I was told " You want your job?  You show up - I don't care about your personal life" And so I did. Sure on occasion I'd have pneumonia for real but not very often.

As an employer our hands are tied pretty tight as to what we can do to motivate employees here in California. I am fully aware of the write them up 3 times and then fire them format. And we do just that. But nowadays usually they quit on the 2nd written warning.  In my line of work it is getting harder and harder to find good employees. Who wants to work on filthy dirty tires and mechanical work anymore?

I guess I say all that to ask this? What are some of your creative ways of managing employees who have a habitual pattern of being " Sick". I know there are a lot of small business owners out here. Just curious as to your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I have about 5 years left till I sell everything and bail.

  10. I have been with Paychex since 2017. For the most part they are good. But twice a year something goes sideways.

In March after I submitted the proper request to change my source back for payroll what happened? They tried to run it through the old closed account. I was on vacation and from my air BnB had to play the phone game for two hours for them to figure it out.  All my guys got paid 3 days late, I was charged a late filing fee by Paychex themselves.

Then this summer they transposed a bank account number when submitting my payroll taxes and it was like that for 2 months. Once again they froze my account and took forever to figure that out.

Then today it happened again.  The largest most anticipated payroll as I pay my guys holiday pay, year end bonuses, commissions and regular pay they froze my account so it did not go through. After 4 hours of phone tag they confessed it was an accident.  And once again my guys would not get paid until the day after Christmas and I would be charged that late fee AGAIN!

I kept my cool (man that was hard) went into my account for the totals and just hand wrote checks all morning to get my guys their hard earned monies.

Yes, I am now ready to find another service. Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

Competing with the background noise of a UTV, plus the complete lack of enclosure to the cab, I'd not waste money on the stereo.  It's only going to sound good when parked.  At speed, it's never going to sound "right" with all the other competing soundwaves canceling half the spectrum completely at random.  In-helmet would be the way to go unless the entire reason for it is to sound good when parked for everyone to "enjoy".

Thanks, Yeah I have had many SXS's and very familiar with that issue. We have also had in ears as well for music and communication.

Very interested in what system you choose and how you like your KRX4 as well....

I have an appointment at a local UTV stereo installer near my house for early December. I'll let you know how that goes. As far as my KRX experience I currently have 3 rides on it ( no dunes yet though). Is there anything specific you had questions about?

Please just listen to music through your headsets, no one (NO ONE!) wants to hear other's music in the dunes. When we stop and hang out, the tranquility is bliss.

Yeah, that aint me one bit LoL. We do a lot of desert and mountain stuff where we are miles and mile away from human ears.

  14. I am looking for opinions. I am going to put a sound system in my KRX4. But I want it to be good. I don't listen to reverb bass much, But I love the THUMP from the kick drum in my back on songs like Billy Jean etc.  in my back from a good sub, as well as clear mids and highs.

I hear a lot of systems that are loud and obnoxious too many highs, too fuzzy etc.. I don't want that. I am being told that the NOAM NUTV5-S Quad is the best bang for the buck. Has anyone tried this? Or if you have a system that you'd recommend? Thanks in advance.

  15. Thanks guys this gives me some avenues and products to check out. I really appreciate that.

For the record we tracked my daughter's car by the air pods left in her console. We brought the S.O. in on it, they met us at the home but would not do anything. The house had a large back yard with lots of covering, and because they could not see anything they had no PC to search. I was LIVID. This was in the middle of what's know as "The Nest" in Hesperia. So S.O. left. We did end up getting the car back a few weeks later with minor damage.

  16. I am ready to take the plunge as crime where I live is off the hook. Neighbors car, my daughters car, friends SXS's all stolen within the last year. Now my home has plenty of security and surveillance but I still want to protect some of our hard earned goodies if they ever grow wings. I am curious if any of ya'll use a lowjack or type device? What have you got and what's your opinion?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
