If he already hasn't resigned, I'd be re-thinking this decision. He's a fireman by 24-25 years old. He has no formal education or trade school certificate. Those will cost him tens of thousands of dollars to receive and he will be making the same amount as he would a fireman if he was to stick it out but with a student loan payment. There are many avenues to the fire department he maybe hasn't heard of. paramedic, engineer, arson investigator, promotions, etc... Has he recently become a fireman? Is the hardship of probation and being the new guy difficult? We've all been there but the reward at the end of that tunnel is nice. We've all seen some $hit and public safety has certainly taken a lot of humanity out of my life, but I'll retire at 50 years old with nearly 90% of my salary with lifetime medical. Plus, everyone loves firefighters.

    Andrew

He resigned I tried to point out all the positives. I don’t understand his decision fully. As a dad I knew as a firefighter he would be set for life. I want him to be happy and stable so I have to respect his decision. He now will have to live with that decision.

my 23 year old son has a BSN in nursing and is a ER nurse and is doing very well. The pay for his age is incredible. He loves his job. What he sees everyday doesn’t bother him. I think his Dirtbike and weight lifting keeps his mind healthy. Two different kids.

    Thanks for responding.

Lineman sounds great, but when I screw up at work, I get yelled at..... when linemen screw up, well lets say it's more immediate and intense.

Either get a job where you are government protected in your job, or one where you call the shots... any of the stuff in between sucks...Bean counters and wokeness is getting worse everywhere.

Has he talked to the older firemen?  They all feel the same thing as him, maybe he can find a better way to deal with it. It's a hell of a career to walk away from.

He has talked to his department. They were very supportive and  continue to reach out. He has decided that it isn’t for him. It was a extremely tough decision.

I am 55 years old and watching my friends that were lineman retire at 55 sure makes me look back some on what I did.  I didn't graduate college until 24 yr old, so a bit late to the game back then.  I have worked in my field for 30 plus years, mostly as a 1099 sales person.  So like most I wasn't good at saving until 35-40 years old, so a bit behind with my Retirement fund.  They all have huge pensions and never need to worry about the future, while I see my retirement take a 18% negative hit this year.  It is hard for a 25 year old to look 30 years ahead..................sorry I am no help

    I'm in the same boat.

    Just a few ideas.

If being a firefighter got to him, does he claim any mental health issues?  Maybe he can get educational benefits/occupational retraining?  Just a thought.

As Cookie mentioned, what benefits can he get?  Sometimes the highest paying job right now, doesn't pay off in the end.  Pensions are VERY hard to come by the days.  I'm sure glad I have mine.  I retired at 43 and never had to work again, even though I still do.  If he does find something high paying, factor in retirement savings.  What people "think" they need to retire and what you actually need are 2 VERY different things.  Don't forget about medical.  A lot of places have stopped that as a retirement benefit.  Medical will bankrupt even the richest of us, especially as we get older.

Education.  "IF" he knows or decides, then pursue a degree.  If he's undecided, do general education now at a junior college. Don't waste time or money at a private college like PIMA, ITT, ect... the will be overpriced, not accredited (even though they say they are), 4 year schools are overpriced and don't have as flexible of schedules.  Doing 2-3 years at a JC and then transferring...you still get your degree from "University of" whatever.

Trade schools.  Be careful.  These can be WAY overpriced and not worth anything.  Again, not all are accredited like they say.

Look 5-10 years in the future.  Mechanics must be computer savvy.  What about drone/UAV mechanic or pilot?  Big futures in that.  I see automotive as too volatile right now.  We have no idea where that is going.

Lastly, it's not crazy but...what about going to places that interest him and request a "reverse interview"?  You go to them and see what opportunities and future they have.  You might find that something great now, has a 5-10 year shelf life and then now older...maybe with a family...he'll be looking for a new career.  I never saw myself working in logistics, but our company has grow so much and there is no end in sight.

Thanks for all of the ideas!

  5. Thank You for all of the good ideas!. I'm going to have my son read this topic. He can weld and fabricate. I've been in the union for 35 years and our pension isn't what it used to be, I'm hoping for something better for him.

  6. I have a 25-year-old son. I’m trying to help with a new career choice. He’s very mechanical, sharp, and works hard. He builds motors and tunes them as a hobby. I’ve worked in commercial/ industrial A/C my entire life. Our industry isn’t what it used to be, and I think there are better choices.  Any advised on where to steer him would be appreciated. He was a firefighter and what he’s witnessed over the last few years has gotten to him. It was a great job just not the right fit. He would like a trade.

I turned on the air conditioner a couple of days ago when the hot days were cooking us and smelled an unusual smell coming from the vents. Its that smell that something is getting hot, maybe plastic or electrical. I thought I better check things out before it caught on fire. I checked out the wiring in the furnace compartment, nothing seems hot or warm even. Grabbed the blower wheel and it seemed to turn freely and not loose or noisy. Reached up and touched the blower motor and WOW, that thing is hotter than a peanut. Its 25 years old so no complaints other than adding it to the do list.  Finished sealing the ledger stone that we have installed on the front of the house.

Best part is our oldest grandson turned 13 Saturday. He had a soccer game in the morning that was fun to watch. Several school girls showed up to watch the game, they left early and on the way out they all yelled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRODY". Grandpa going to tease him with that one for a while. The rest of the day with family and celebration.

    Church and ribs today.

The capacitor is probably bad, at 25 years I’d do both at the same time. My bet is the capacitor you could test/change it and see if it cures the issue.

Simply by saying Ivermectin helped you , you can be banned from social media....IT was friggen America last time I checked... let people take the treatments that THEY want to take... then it's on them....

I'm glad  you are doing better..... just curious did you wait from the time you had the first symptoms to start treating or did it just kick your arse from the start?

my wife got the monoclonal antibodies in about 3 days. I did the telemed appointment after about 4 days it seemed like a waste of time. I figured we would walk right through it. We waited another 4 days until I realized we were in trouble. A friend in the medical field called and started me on some antibiotics and ivermectin. My wife went into the hospital. She needed to be there she was really sick. My son was on it and pushed hard to get the right care for his mom. I should’ve probably went to the hospital but to pig headed. Luckily I started getting better. In hindsight we waited too long to seek the care we needed.  Never again I will make my decision now before I get sick.

  10. I don’t really have a opinion. My wife and I are both vaccinated. We just went through the toughest period in our life. We both ended up with Covid pneumonia. Did all the standard protocols. Ivermectin seemed to really help me . My wife ended up in the hospital for 9 days . It was very scary. My youngest is a ER nurse and took care of her 24/7. My oldest is a firefighter and took care of me. My wife will be on oxygen for a couple more weeks. I learned I raised men that stepped up when we needed them, we are blessed. My friends stepped in and got me everything I needed. I was humbled by the experience. I still don’t know what to think of this BS virus. I know I don’t want it again and try not to sweat the small stuff
