New ride for the dune season - Kawi H2

Another great trip to Glamis in the books and another 300 miles on the H2. We did a ride to Duners Diner yesterday morning from Wash 15. Headed from the Wash to China Wall then to Disco Ball and then off to the diner. It was about 52 miles round trip and the H2 took about 9 gallons to do it. It was a gas hog on the way back. Gas gauge was just about 3/4 when we got to the diner and the gas light was flashing when I got back to camp. With the gas light flashing there is still 5 or so gallons left in the tank.

Only issue this trip was killing a belt. Probably going to just run with the clutch cover off. I ended up putting on a new stock belt as I do want to see if I can get one to live. Car ran great and I smoked my buddy up Olds in his Pro R two seater with the 300hp Bikeman set up.

When you broke another belt how did the new clutch cover hold up? Are thinking of running without the cover as you think the belt is getting too hot? Or just for easier access? Definitely not the easiest cover to get off and out of the way. The belt you blew was that the GBoost or a stock Kawi belt?

I’ve read other say the fuel light starts flashing with about 5gal left, so 1/3 of a tank. Seems too soon to me. I could see with 2 gal left.

After seeing Chupacabras reel I’d stay away from Aftermarket Assassins H2 stuff right now. Muffler cracked at the pipe, and compared to the other’s exhaust it did not look like as good. And Chupa thinks the AA tune is wrong too and was not happy with customer support.

It was a OEM belt that blew and I was running the cover that already had a hole in it. I will run the good cover when I go to the desert. Two reason for no cover - 1) much easier to change a belt and 2) I think the secondary gets too hot when getting after it on a dune run.

For the life of me I do not understand why Kawi did not put any cooling fins on the secondary to help move the hot air out the duct and help dissipate the heat.. The clutch gets plenty of air flow as the primary is not nearly as hot as the secondary. Also think the stock belt needs to be about 1/8th longer and that would help with the heat as well.

When I was cruising on the sand highway to duners diner (speed were 50-70mph) the clutches were warm, but not hot and the belt was warm. The load on the car is much less and RPMs were in the low to up 7000 range. Now when we were ripping around the dunes the load is much greater and the secondary was hot even with the clutch cover off. You could put your hand on it and hold it there but it was definitely hotter.

I know the Gboost belt runs cooler from my last trip, but you do loose some top end. I am waiting for Evo to release the Alpha belt for the H2.

These are dune issue with a person that is not going to go easy. Both trips the sand was wet which makes things worse. I would love to get a trip in the dunes with some dry sand and see if I have issues. I do believe in the desert the belt will not be an issue as you do not put as much of a load on the belt.

Bummer for Nick and the AA tune. He said when he first put the tune the car was moving and very responsive.

I am in no rush to get a tune on the car. The KWI weights really wake up the car and almost feels like you put a new tune in the car.

Suspension wise I think the front shock valving and bypass porting makes for it being too soft. It will blow through the compression way to easy in "firm setting".

I wondered the same thing about no fins on the secondary. I was a bit surprised to see no air inlet on the secondary either. You would think they would have made it easier to get the cover off around the shock. I bet that was low on the priority list and not doable with the suspension design.

I wonder who is making the belt for EVO. I’d like to see Hunter Works dive in and get a belt for the H2. What’s nice is he does not hide who he works with manufacturing his belts.

I too have never been a fan of tunes. I don’t mind it when they just unlock Nannie’s like speed limiters, but when they start playing around with boost, timing etc. that’s not for me. I’d take reliability and focus on suspension to make up for the benefits more HP might get you.

As far as the front shocks. Schmidty and I can’t remember the other shock tuner I was talking with at the Sand Show. They both said they felt front shocks only needed a revalue and better springs. The bypass holes in the can were fine. But in the rear they both said the rear bypass holes were not in the right locations and they would make new cans for the rear.

The Secondary does have an air duct to it that hits if from behind. The clutch cover is easy to remove as long as you are on somewhat level ground. If the clutch side is on the downhill side it move the shock in a little closer making it a really tight squeeze to get it out. I suspect Kawi is going to make some changes/updates to the clutch ducting and secondary design.

Gboost makes the belts for EVO.

Suspension wise the rear suspension for the dunes is good. I have not bottomed out the rear suspension or smacked the rear skid plate. The front is what scoops the sand. I saw the other day that SDG is doing suspension work on the H2.
