    Still have my go fast toys, but this thing is just so easy to own.  They are not a solution for everything yet but the tech is on its way.  A Hybrid HD truck would be amazing.  No brake pad use - Recaptured energy.  Plentiful TQ thats instant.  Do away with transmissions.  No more seals, gaskets, fluids, etc.  I think this is where it at with current battery tech.  There are many prius out there with millions of miles.

    I drive my Dmax At4 only when I have to.  Not racking up miles but have it available when I need it.

     

    Yes, turbo diesel hybrid is the most efficient method we currently have, that's why the locomotives use it. The VW XL1 is advertised to get 200 mpg at 75 mph, but actually delivers 260 mpg on the road. If they made a TD electric drive with a small TD engine and 4 electric motors, one per wheel that kicked in and out as needed, we could have 1200 ft lb of torque when needed and only using two electric motors at Cruise using only the power necessary to overcome resistance, we could get some very impressive range out of it plenty of towing capacity when desired.

  2. I understand that with an analog meter, they have no idea what time you are using the power. However, a friend of mine who also has solar panels is of the opinion that the crooks at SDG&E are just going to use your recent TOU history to guesstimate your usage even with the analog meter and your bill will remain the same, even though they only read the analog meter every 2 months and guesstimate in between. They've taken the business of screwing customers to a fine art form.

    The best solution would be to buy a good size battery backup and let the panels charge that up during the day and run off the battery during peak hours.

    Camry, other than total range (which is meaningless if we’re comparing daily commuters), is more comparable to a Bolt/Bolt EUV or a base Model 3. Base Bolt is $26k right now:

    259 miles of range, 0-60 in 6.7 seconds, slightly smaller interior (94 or 97 ft3 vs 100), but with a slightly larger trunk (17 vs 15). Getting to work and back, nothing’s gonna beat the Bolt right now $/mile.

    Ultimately, up to whoever is signing on the dotted line. 

    You wouldn't catch me dead in a Chevy Bolt. They're the Rzr of the EV world.

    General Motors recalled 140,000 Chevrolet Bolts after some batteries caught fire.

    Now the government and Newscum ramming electric vehicles down my throat - that gets me upset!  But I'm mad that them, not hating on the EV or the advantages this technology will bring.  I think they have a place in many peoples commuting situation and hopefully they all adopt.  Just don't force everyone to adopt.    

    Yes, I agree, an EV is the wrong tool for towing, yet Ford and Chevy (and soon Tesla) are selling trucks and the only reason I bought a truck was to tow with it. I never used it for anything else, so those EV trucks make no sense to me.

    The other issue with EVs is where the power comes from. If someone has a large home solar array and correspondingly large battery bank to charge their EV only from solar, more power to them. Most people aren't doing that and the amount of power they consume from non renewable sources isn't helping.

    79% of US energy comes from fossil fuels, so thinking EVs are a green way to get around is false.

    More importantly, our government should have been developing LFTR reactors, more hydro and tidal power plants, but now they're pushing for more offshore wind turbines. Why? Because the lobbyists told them to because their bosses will make more profits from less efficient, more expensive sources.

    Same thing happened with the corn subsidies for making E85 from ethanol. Brazil makes 8x more ethanol from sugar cane, but the powerful corn lobbyists prevailed.

    Our government doesn't do what's in our nation's best interest, they do what the powerful lobbyists tell them to do. The vaccine scam is just another in a long list of rich people and politicians getting richer off of fleecing the public.

    Every EV can be programmed to charge only during certain hours. The only time you'd fall into the 39.1 cent range is for the last or first 4 hours of a charge if fully charging a completely depleted battery on a Tesla, which is rare.  Smaller battery vehicles charge in less than 7 hours from completely depleted, and a long-ish 40-50 mile daily use is about 2 hours to top back up.

    Generally speaking, 400 miles of standard daily use would be about $4 and some change to accomplish.  Fully depleted would be about 50/50 since the charge rate falls off the higher the charge and depends on when you're starting vs finishing.  Even then, unless you needed to drive the full charge tomorrow, you're better off just letting it top up over a couple of days.

    Where'd you get those rates?  They don't match up with SDGE's site for even standard rates:

    Hell, at the rates you're quoting, you're almost better off charging at a retail station. :biggrin:

    The rest of my post about not spending over $100k for a car with 400 mi or less range is still also a valid point. My hybrid is still a better value at $23k new and 600 mi between 5 - 10 min. fill ups.

  6. Some of you are paying great rates for electricity. Here in San Diego, it's 66.7c per kWh during peak hours 4-9 pm and 41.9c during off peak. If one could fully charge 100kw in peak hrs, it would cost $66.70. if one charged it during off peak, it would cost $41.90. 

    That would give a range of maybe 400 mi if you own the top range model S. For comparison, my Camry hybrid goes 600 mi between fill ups and the most I've ever paid was $65 for just under 12 gal. Most of the fill ups were much less than that, back before recent price hikes.

    I do like the concept of EVs, but the range, vehicle cost, charging cost and time to charge don't make sense for me, yet.

    I can't foresee a time when I would be on a cross country trip and be willing to sit at a charging station for 3 hrs or overnight. When I tow my trailer to St Anthony's, I drive 1100 mi in 2 days, or 550 mi per day, towing. When I drive a car, I average 600 mi per day. That would be 2 recharges on a 300 mi range EV per day. Counting recharge time, there's no way to drive that far per day, plus I can refill a gas tank virtually anywhere in a few minutes.

    Maybe when the prices for EVs and electricity drop. I hear China is poised to flood the US market with over 100 models of cheap EVs once some sort of ban expires.

    My experience has been the opposite in socal. The trick to blazing fast data speeds in a new area is to reboot the phone so it finds the faster 5G signal. We shouldn't have to do that, but it made a huge difference.

    Verizon had and still has great coverage, but T-Mobile has made huge strides since their merger. Starlink has announced that they will be broadcasting the T-Mobile signal from their satellites in the future, giving users slow text msg coverage worldwide for emergency use.

    Other carriers have similar deals with other satellite providers, but starlink is definitely going to be the largest constellation.

  9. You could go online and change your delivery to the local hub and when your tracking software says it's there, go pick it up. That's better than waiting for it all day at home or missing the delivery and having to go down there anyway. From my experience, the original Thursday delivery was the most accurate.

    Now if they were forgiving up to $50,000 or the entire loan that would be a different story.

    Saying they will forgive $10k sounds better for the students with debt, but it's pissing off the taxpayers who feel they are actually paying for it. There are a lot more taxpayers than student debtors, so they're angering the majority to buy the votes of a minority.

    My daughters best friends, a Dr. and a respiratory therapist have going all out to pay their loans off by living way below their means. They also do not agree with this bailout.

    I don't think anyone who isn't a current student debtor agrees with this bailout. However, as I posted above, if they had chosen to reduce the interest rate, I wouldn't have a problem with that and I don't think anyone else would either. It sure sounds better than taxpayers paying off someone else's debt.

    Do you remember what the interest rate was on their student loans?

    The reason I ask is I saw a post supposedly from someone who claims that he did borrow quite a bit in student loans, but that the interest rate was so high that he had been paying over $1200/mo. for the last 10 yrs and had only paid down about $83 of the principal. I don't know if I believe that, it sounds like extremely high interest rate but I have no idea what the gov't is charging on those loans.

    My initial reaction when they said that they would forgive $10k in student loans and $10k in PELL grants was outrage, because I worked 2 jobs, 35 hrs/week ea, with no benefits at minimum wage so I could have the money and the schedule flexibility to put myself through college. It was a long uphill slog of getting 2 hrs of sleep at a time in the store parking lot before working a 3rd shift stocking shelves, then a 1st shift at another store, then classes. I finally completed my degree, but it probably took the longest in history to complete it, debt free.

    After spending a large portion of my adult life working day and night to get here, I'm not the least bit interested in paying for someone else's debt. However, the way this administration is going about it is example # 564,327 of why we've elected the biggest morons on the planet to run this country. Instead of telling everyone they're going to forgive XX amount of student debt and pissing off the majority of us taxpayers just to buy the votes of a group of student debt holders, why not reduce their interest rate to a much lower one which would allow them to pay off their debt on their own at a much faster rate?

    This wouldn't piss off the majority of taxpayers because we're not being asked to pay off someone else's debt. At the same time it would still buy the votes of the student debt holders because it could possibly save them much more than $10k and allow them to get out from under a crippling debt. That's assuming the interest rate is as bad as the guy claimed it is.  

    This country is being divided and run into the ground by the biggest morons in history!

He showed me a tiny version of a bird house, about 1" x 1", hanging from a piece of welding wire and a small perch on the front made from a toothpick. I asked him if they really went into the house. He said, "Of course! Do you feel any of them biting you right now?" I said, "No."

    He said, "That's because they're in there right now, effing!"

    When they came to my house the  vector control folks in san diego told me they came up from central America.  They have been watching the migration for about a decade now.  They got a lot better visibilty when they crossed the border and they began tracking them through the county.
