  1. After looking at the existing wiring, decided F it - ripped it all out and ordered a new painless kit...Yesterday was the day I realized why people spend way more than they plan on these things...I didnt budget for a 700 painless kit :| - Also ordered a new fuel tank with all items needed for EFI  last night-  and today going to rip out the old diesel tanks.

@wesinls none of those pictures are working for me.

I've thought about doing the same thing for years, but never pulled the trigger.

Sometimes I can take a screen shot and paste and the site works, then a few hours later it turns to a link...Anyway, this one should work.  And me too, been thinking about this for 2 or so years and saw this come up on facebook for a good price.  Motor and trans come next week - super pumped, but a lot of work left.

    Great question.

I prefer a 2 seater so have to convince myself to go with a 4/5 seater. I need doors cause I’m old and fat. I wouldn’t want a PBS trans. Not because they aren’t a good trans but my understanding is parts are scarce or non-existent. I don’t know if I would fit being 6’5” so might need mods for that. And I don’t know what dash or gauges are there or what ecu. That’s just off the top of my head from the info listed in the ad. So what would I spend on this car after buying it? Maybe $50k or more? An S5D is about $18.5k just for trans. An Albins is $35k. I’m looking at cars that are much later model, have all the stuff I’m interested in with Albins trans and are in the high $100k range so like $180k-$190k. For my situation, I would rather spend an extra $20k-$30k and get a newer car that was built with all the stuff I want. I may very well spend a bunch more and build a new car exactly how I want it. I plan to make a decision in the next few weeks so I posted this thread in case somebody has a car that fits the bill and is thinking about selling or planning to sell at end of season.

If you have the $ to get new, do it...Otherwise there will always be something you'll want to change...seats, paint job, lights, etc. You're driving someone else's vision if used.  Buying a new high end sand rail would be an awesome experience, if you have the ability to do it - F it, do it.  But, either option is a good one - no bad decision no matter which way you go :)

That headwind can be absolutely brutal coming back. Even worse if it’s a crosswind at that speed.

Get any BBQ while there? If not, prayers sent.

No - fast food only unfortunately, Drive took a lot longer than expected.  Sucks, I was looking forward to that place you suggested...but didnt get into El Paso until 10pm

  5. Washes for me - Totally F'd up that I go to Gecko on an off weekend - Friday, get there at 1PM and there's no spots.  Am I jealous, yes - but also kind of douchee to have people take up space when they are not even there- seems like they all have at least one retired buddy who watches all the rigs.

Washes - always a spot available.  Gecko also felt a bit Orange county to me - small tight shorts and flat bill dudes...50+ trying to look 25...too cool for me.

Going off what GM did in the performance packages...

    Stockish LS3 2400-2800

Closer to 500hp and above  3000k+

My brother did the "connect and cruise" 525/LS3/6L80 in his C10.  Rips!

Funny you mentioned that - after your question i remembered that they make a connect and cruise for the LS3/525 - and the converter on that combo is 3000-3400, seems like an easy decision - use what Chevy provides on that combo.

  7. I'm going to be soon putting a crate LS3 and a 4L80 into a C10 (If all goes well over the next week or so)...but I'm struggling a bit on who to go to for purchasing a rebuilt, or potentially even a low mileage 4L80e.  Can anyone recommend a shop in San Diego? Online?

Stall speeds - Thinking somewhere between 2500 and 3000...From what I've read and watched online this seems like a well-rounded choice,

I love how it's called an atmospheric river now. We used to just call it rain..

So funny, been thinking the same thing - went from El Nino for 3 or 4 years, to the new term of Atmospheric river.

  9. Made it home...40 MPH head winds and I was getting 7.5 MPG with the rental Tacoma on the first day - truck struggled to do 60. Day 2 it went up to 9ish doing 70.  I've been looking for Hurricane 228 for a good deal for a long time and saved a ton of money by doing this long trip...Laned in Houston at midnight Friday, picked up boat and drove to El Paso - arrived around 10:30 PM...Because of the wind and slower speeds - and taking longer than I wanted with seller, I ate gas station food that night.  Woke up at 5, made it home around 7PM. One tire blowout but I had a spare.

El Paso wasn't that bad...I had no idea how big of a city it was.  I'd park there again for the night if ever doing one of these runs again (hopefully no time soon, it was brutal).

  10. I could bypass El Paso and end up in Carlsbad New Mexico (i always stay at Hyatt's for points) - but it would add 60 miles / and hour to my trip.  Seems minimal, but I'm not sure it's worth it.  All the talk of not staying there is making we wonder though.

  11. I'll be driving from Houston to San Diego this weekend...First day will be from Houston to El Paso, then from El Paso to home...

Any recommended BBQ places along the 10 I should stop in for lunch? Any place in El Paso to eat dinner?  Fireworks places along the route maybe?

Love all the comments thanks guys, Also LoL, This sounds like exactly what I do. Great advice always.

FYI we offer all our guys a competitive wage with the opportunity to earn bonuses and advancement at a fast pace if they have 3 things, good attitude, attendance and performance.  Paid holidays, no weekends, closed from Wed thru Sun for T-Day paid, Closed Christmas Eve until the 2nd also paid. Clean organized mellow environment. Myself and my manager never talk down to or show negativity to any employee. We let them make that bed. I have learned that bad employees will expose themselves to be so in time.

I am just surprised at how flakey our society is becoming.

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. People just suck sometimes.

  13. I don't own a business but I do manage several people.  My advice (it's worked for me so far as no one really calls out much) - is to find out what makes each of your employees happy.  Develop a personal relationship with them...Some people like to be told they did a good job every day (even for the small things), some people want to be left alone entirely, some people want you to be their best friend and talk to them about what's on their mind...But what I've learned is that all people are different in what makes them happy in a business setting.

If you develop a personal relationship and find out what makes them happy (even if it disgusts you in example to tell someone who sucks they did a great job that day) - do it.  When they call out sick, tell them - I hope you feel better soon, we will miss you at the shop (when in reality you're thinking to yourself, f'ng douche :) ).  Don't give them a guilt trip, tell them to take care of themselves and that you look forward to seeing them back at work.  If people feel like the people who manage them genuinely care about them, they will be more likely to show up for work and work hard for you.

  14. Using this one for 2 years - no issues yet. LS3, dual radiator fans, small oil cooler fans, heated seats, electric power steering, light bars, etc.  (It's 160 amp). Volt gauge always above 14 volts even at idle with fans running.  I liked the fact that it was AC Delco...I'm using Odyssey PC950 battery...smallish, but was what I had room for from previous owners battery tray....so far so good.
