  1. Were coming into a mid-term election year, and it's pretty easy right now to point the finger at the party that is mostly responsible for the decisions that have driven up gas prices,  mostly hurting the people directly in the pocket book that are known for voting for that very party responsible.

I would assume (hope) that this price surge will be temporary, and there will be an effort coming shortly to help relieve the situation for us all, regardless of how you vote.

Went from $40 to fill up my commuter every week at the end of 2020 to $80 a week yesterday.

so is that because the tranny is just longer or that the R&P is larger than the 2D?

The HV-24 is actually almost a full inch shorter from BH to shifter shaft than a 2D from end to end.

The HV's have a longer distance from CV joint to bell housing due to the bulkhead being built into the main case for better strength, rather than the 2D having the bell housing act as the bolt on bulkhead that tightens up that distance. So when placing the gearbox so the CV are in the exact same forward/back plain in the chassis, the HV will set the engine further back than a 2D.

It all depends on where/how the 2D is mounted now. The distance from the CV joint to the front of the trans for an HV is actually shorter than a 2D, but since it is "boxier" than the tapered nosecone of the 2D, it might interfere with a rear cross member/torsion housing of the chassis.

  3. He E-mailed me but I don't have any specific experience and can only give generic answers. It all depends on where the 2D is currently mounted and how much room it has in front of it. Best case scenario, you can mount the HV-24 where the CV joints are in the same location so you would not need new trailing arms. This will push the engine back about 3/4", and will require some room at the nosecone. I would need pictures of what is there now to give more detail.

  4. At this point, this is your gamble and you will need to understand the consequences of your decisions.

If the gear noise has gotten progressively worse with use over the past few runs, then it most likely means you have a gear that is wearing out, and you will have a limited amount of time before it eventually fails.

If the noise has always been there since you received it back from a fresh service and it was deemed ok to run agin, and has not gotten any louder with use, then there is a chance that you simply have a noisy gear. But that does not mean the gear is not wearing out either.

The consequence of running until it breaks is all of those little bits and pieces running through the other gears since there is no magnet in that portion of the housing to catch them. A $400 3rd gear can turn into a $2000 1st-4th set in a matter of seconds after it breaks.

The gamble comes with not knowing what exactly is happening in the trans. Even changing the oil and checking the magnet is not going to prove that nothing is going wrong and about to fail.

I would put it this way, if you are ok with dealing with the expense of replacing every gear in the trans after it breaks, then run the piss out of it and have a tow strap ready to get your car back to camp. If you are the type that would rather play it safe and would be ok with not having the car to use while you wait for parts to save a bunch of money, then pull the trans and get it serviced before your wallet gets a lot lighter.

It's your choice, it's up to you to weigh your options and make the best decision that suits you and your budget.

  5. I am planning on making an "FAQ" (Frequently Asked Questions) card to hand out which will answer about 95% of the questions that will be asked:

1: No, It's not in stock. See #2:

    2. No, I don't know when it will be back in stock.

I can't say that I am looking forward to this years show. At least when you guys yell at me over the phone I can take my headset off and work on other things until I hear the buzzing stop in the ear pieces. I can't do that in person.

If you come to the booth and Ron and I aren't there, it's probably because we saw Grant, Rich, or Andrew walking towards us and we ran to our predetermined hiding places.

All (half) joking aside, I am looking forward to getting back to in person shows again, pending the new round of shutdowns that will most likely be imposed on us all again.
