I would really like to not hate going to work..........  I actually like doing my job & getting stuff done, its all of the rest that I hate.  2 people make this place suck.  unfortunately the A-Holes get rewarded.........

The older we get and "closer" to retirement, the more it sucks.  Once you hit that point, your disdain for the job will increase everyday until you leave/retire.

While different...the day I hit 20 years in the Navy, my hatred increased everyday.  "Why am I still doing this?"  "Do I put in my papers now?"

I was going though divorce, just got guaranteed orders for 5 more years in San Diego on shore.  I stuck around for 5 more years.  It was smart but I swear those last 5 years took my soul.  It took a long time to get "me" back.

  2. I have a gift to do things I hate for the money.  I HATED the Navy, but saw the benefit in retiring early and the benefits.  Would I do it again starting over today?  Nope, but the decision has already been made.

I didn't have to work after I retired from the Navy but I wanted more.  Yeah, I bitched and complained but eventually, a company called me and asked if I wanted a job.  I wouldn't be making what I wanted.  I wouldn't be doing what I wanted.  But...it was remote and had job security and...it's not really hard or time consuming.  I've been there 4 years now and  the money is not bad for what I do and it really only supplements my retirement.  My play money if you will.

So.... @Orange_R what are you giving up other than money if you make the jump?  Pension retirement?  Benefits?  Location?  If you are on a 401K, will the decrease still get you to where you "hope" to be when you retire?  ALWAYS...plan on needing a lot more than you think you do.  Don't think about bills, think about lifestyle.  Think about the oh sh*ts that come up that will need to be paid for.

Lastly, RC is your hobby.  I don't prescribe to the "do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life..."  I've always said...do something you love...you'll learn to hate it.  It's why I never pursued starting my own business, working in a field that is something I consider a hobby.

  3. Had this happen not even 6 months ago.  It was like 7pm.  Off to Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart to try and find the same brand so not to have to remount and rewire all of them right before bedtime.

    Replaced all 8 of them.

  4. I got flamed for it before but I'll say it again, I was really hoping the economy would have priced people out of Glamis.  Another flame me statement...SXSs have ruined Glamis and off-roading nationwide.  A lot of good people own SXSs.  They are fun, practical, nothing wrong with them.  Then enter the non-experienced sh*theads and a$$holes that their homie, bro, ese, etc...told them to get or the COVID, let me finance my this to get me out instead of going to Disney or on a vacation types.  AND...more flaming...this younger generation (millennials and zoomers). They don't give a single f*ck about anything but themselves..."MY GLAMIS!"  I'll ride where I want!  I'll stop where I want!, etc...  Most aren't on here and stay on FB or IG.  I really lose my chit when I see older folks acting this way...You f*cking know better.  I see their posts...they only care about themselves and they have their stupid mentality that it takes a village for them to have their fun.   "We need help!"  "I need gas!", blah, blah, blah...  I'm not their village and refuse to be.

This season is a wash for me.  Car is not done.  I have been out a couple times to camp with people and might do a couple more but really haven't done any riding.  Once I get my car back together, I plan on joining the off weekend crowd or even the midweek crowd.  I'm done dealing with retards.  Mac has aged out! GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

  5. @dbart The epoxy floors are worth every penny.  Make sure and fill the cracks.

Before jumping all into this, look at where you want cabinets and such.  Look at where you want extra outlets or to move existing outlets.  Think big.  You will be glad you did.  Want about extra lighting?  What about a dropdown staircase if you have an attic?  What about moving plumbing/putting in a whole house filter/car wash filter system?

A big rollaway tool box/bench is awesome.  I love mine.

Look at how you will want to use the garage after you put the time and money into it.  The whole functionality of it.  No point in spending the money if you find that you can't use it to its maximum potential.

For you retired fellas, who still has a mortgage on your primary residance?

My very short term go is to pay off the house.  Actual "retirement" is a long way off...

I would like to get my house paid off before retiring again and have some "ideas" to make that happen but dammit if things I want don't keep popping up...

We bought this house a little over 3 years ago.  My interest rate is 2.25%.  Other than just not having to make the monthly payment, paying it off early is not a "huge" savings.  I am also on a pension retirement with COLA increases every year, along with VA compensation with COLA.  My situation is probably much different than most here.

  7. One thing I forgot to mention, if you think you need "X" amount of money to retire, you'd be wise to increase that significantly.   You may live longer, don't forget unexpected expenses, upkeep, inflation,  etc...  Medical is a big one most overlook.  Regardless of what the government says or you think you know about Medicare,  you will be paying more than you think.

I've never understood the "save a million for retirement..."  I have WAY over that and I'm not rich by any means.

Retirement is wasted on old people, having the freedom to do what you want when you don’t feel like doing anything is an odd goal.
You’re only 50, 53, 56… once, if you can retire do it.

I retired @ fiddy, could have doubled my retirement income by working 6 more years but chose to bounce with enough income to keep the lights on.

The one thing I can tell you is make sure you have someplace to be and something to do periodically, waking up at 10am and mixing your first adult beverage at 11:30am isn’t a recipe for success.

I have accounts where I move snow in the winter and do backhoe / brush clearing in the summer. I’m at the gym 5 days a week from 7:40 - 9:15am. My goal is to earn my whiskey / ammo / go fishing money leaving my previously earned cash alone.

Sometimes I want to go back to full time employment so I’m not so busy.

    Bouy for the win.

This is so true.  Retire when you can.  At the end of the day, be honest...what you do for a company isn't really that important.  They will squeeze everything they can from you till you're dead if you let them and replace you before you're even in the ground.

  9. I retired at 43.  I took 7 years off before my wife said go get another job...

I loved it.  Sleep till you're your hungry, eat till you're tired.  My Dad was worried.  He said people who retire early, die early.  He asked what would I do if money was no object...I said more of what I was doing. I loved being retired and not responsible for anything.  Do what you want, when you want.  I traveled some, remodeled my house, went backpacking with my kids.  Spent months in Glamis.  My wife pushed me to go to school..."Do something!"  I got 3 Master's degrees, went to culinary college.

In the end, a company called me and asked if I wanted a job.  I said I would have to work from home as I was not going to an office everyday.  Been over 4 years now.  It's easy but I miss doing nothing and having more freedom.  It's just hard to turn down extra money for very little effort.

Replacing smoke detectors and gonna wrench on the new car a little.
need to get a pool cover and vacuum also.
Last four weekends have been having fun in the desert. Time to clean up the ToDo list.

A couple months ago...:sexywave: and I just settled down to watch TV and boom...f*cking smoke detectors started going off for no reason.  We couldn't isolate which one it was so...take them all down, run to Lowes, Walmart and Home Depot to try and find the same brand so I don't have to rewire and  put up new base plates at f*cking 9pm.

So...for TODAY....we are FINALLY getting our new couch.  We had bought one when we bought our new place but it just isn't what we had hoped it to be.  So in the words of :sexywave:"we can do better".  SO... we custom order a couch and now 4 months later, after calling, emailing...finding out who the CEO of Living Spaces is...AND...blowing him up daily....we are now getting our new couch today.

Also...getting all my new solar stuff today and adding another panel to the moho.  Gonna be a busy weekend.
